Is it ok to delete .idx files?

My toshiba laptop is maybe a year old, and I've kept up with virus protection as much as possible, but my last scan showed 16 viruses to my surprise. Some were removed and some "detected" by my virus protection. Can anyone explain what "detected" means and if its ok to delete these files. They are located in variously numbered files within another file called 6.0 which is in the file cache, which is in the appdata file overall. Sorry if that's confusing :( oh and There are also files with no specific type of file at the end of the name to identify the type of file, is it ok to delete those too?
