How can I repair my MP3's earphone connectivity?

I have the exact same problem with my earphones right now, and I have already managed to get through about 5 pairs. :( I don't think there is a way to guarantee that they will work forever, but if you must, maybe purchase one more pair and give that tutorial a go. They say nothing lasts forever. :(
